Tammen's
Companion Pets
Pictured on this page are some of the Tammen's Basenjis puppies, young adults and retirees who found the perfect home!
They are well loved and cared for and exemplify the fact that they are important members of their families.
Pictured above are some of our Basenjis which we have placed in wonderful pet homes.

Their ages, personalities and looks vary.  We try to match our pets with the
home that will work best for them.  It is important that we know what type
of companion you are looking for and what type of family and
home enviroment you have.

Their needs vary, some would like to be the only pet, others would like to
have kids to play with and some would prefer a more quiet home
and someone to cuddle.

Companion pets come in the form of puppies, young adults, and also
older dogs who are retired from the show ring or breeding program
are sometimes available to approved homes.

Sorry we do not have any Basenjis available at this time.
You may want to go to the Basenji Club of America's Web Site to find a
breeder near
you.

Tammen's Basenjis Puppy Application

Thank you for inquiring about our Basenjis.  We are dedicated "fanciers" who participate in conformation events.  We breed to produce what we believe to be quality Basenjis that conform to the breed standard, are intelligent, have wonderful temperaments, and are healthy.

When we have litters, we make sure our puppies are sold to loving committed homes.  We do our best to screen the owners to ensure a good match between the puppy and the buyer.  Before the puppy leaves our home, it has been well cared for and socialized.  The puppy does not go to it's new owner as a trained, well-mannered finished product.  It is up to the puppy buyer to complete the job we have started. The new owner is responsible for the further development of the puppies personality, through structured discipline, training, guidance, and love. In an effort to ensure that our puppies are going to receive the love and care they will require throughout their lives, we ask all potential buyers to complete the questionnaire below. However, completing and returning the questionnaire does not guarantee that you will be approved as a possible owner.

All of our pet puppies are sold on a Limited Registration--without exception, which means that if the dog is bred, the resulting offspring will not be recognized or registrable with the AKC.  Pet puppies are required to be spayed/neutered - - NO EXCEPTIONS!

As much as possible we attempt to evaluate each puppy’s personality by observing them during their development, and as much as possible we attempt to match the puppy to the buyer to produce the best fit of puppy and family. In other words, we will pick what we feel is the best puppy for you based on your questionnaire answers and talking with you.

Prior to taking the puppy home you will be given information on training and care of your puppy and a list of the proper equipment and supplies to obtain prior to bringing your puppy home. At the time you purchase your puppy you will be given a completed sales agreement (which you must sign), we will fill out the AKC papers which I will mail from here with your check, parents OFA certifications, our health records, as well as any additional information that we feel may be needed. You will also need to bring a crate to take your new puppy home in. If you do not bring a crate you will have to go purchase one or come back at another time with a crate.

We make every effort to ensure that our puppies are free from inherited defects, by screening perspective breeding stock for those problems common to our breed. However due to complex genetic interactions and environmental factors beyond our control we cannot guarantee that a puppy purchased from us will be free of genetic disorders. We will be glad to give you a copy of all health testing done on the puppies parents.

We also use the Bio Sensor program to give puppies a head start, as well as expose the puppies to many protein sources. The litter is also exposed to various sounds and noises from age 4 weeks. The litter will also be structurally evaluated to the AKC Breed Standard at six, eight and twelve weeks.

Please research the Basenji before wanting to buy one. Do not make the mistake of buying ANY puppy on impulse. It could be the worse mistake of your life, and cost you and the puppy months of sorrow. A puppy is a cute little bundle of fur. A Basenji is only a cute little puppy for a few short time. Very quickly, it becomes a teen-aged dog who has a great sense of humor, and boundless energy. Do not expect a Basenji to be a mature dog for two to five years. Do expect to spend a good amount of your time troubleshooting many "growing-up" issues, including training and every day living with your Basenji.

All Tammen's Basenji companion pets are sold on a spay/neuter contract. I will stay on your companion pets registration papers until I receive from your vet a letter stating the the companion pet has been spayed or neutered. At that time I will sign off as co-owner on the registration papers so you can have them changed over to just your name.

You will sign a contract before your companion pet leaves my home. In this contract all expectations of both parties are clearly delineated. Most importantly: If you cannot keep your dog for any reason at any time during its life, I am given the right of first refusal to take the dog back. When the companion pet leaves my house for yours, it is not the end of our relationship, but the beginning. I am always there for questions, problem-solving, referrals (Vets, handlers anything else), and I encourage you keep me posted on your dog's progress.

All companion pets must be picked up in person we do not ship.
